This week in Language Arts, we worked on a 5 square informational writing. We had to think of a problem and then think of an invention to solve the problem. We also worked in Study Island.
This week in Science, we learned about extinction. Sadly, polar bears are becoming extinct because they ice caps are melting and they don’t adapt so well to changes. We also learned that crocodiles have survived for millions of years because they do adapt well to changes. We learned that people are responsible for many of the animal extinctions that are occurring.
This week in Social Studies, we learned about the British Army and their leaders. The army was strong and tall. They were well-trained because their job was to be a soldier. They had a bigger percentage of winning. Some of their leaders include Cornwallis. Cornwallis was the leader of the Battle of Yorktown. He made his army surrender to the colonists. Also this week, we learned about some American victories of the Revolution. One, for example, is the Battle of Yorktown. Another thing we learned about is the Treaty of Paris. That was signed saying that the Revolutionary War was OVER!
In Math this week, we learned about number patterns. Number patterns are a group of numbers that have a pattern. You have to find out what the pattern is. You ask yourself what you do to get to the next number. Here is an example: 5, 9, -1, 3, -7 ___. The way you figure is out is by asking 5 plus what number equals 9? It is 4. So now you have to ask what do you do to 9 to get to -1? Well, 9 minus 10 equals -1. So the pattern is plus 4, minus 10. Now, you add 4 to the -7, and you get -3. We also learned about function boxes. That’s when you have a group of numbers that are separated into columns. The first column is the IN box and the second column is the OUT box.
This week we had a lot of special events. We had Student of the Month and Izzy was the Student of the Month from our class for integrity. The fifth grade also went to the Onsted Park for an afternoon. We had a lot of fun. Then on Friday we went to JJs and the people who passed their goals on NWEA in both Math and Reading got to go shopping.
